A Pentagram is an ancient spiritual symbol shaped as a five-pointed star with one point aligned upwards. With a single point upwards it depicted spirit presiding over the four elements of matter, and was essentially “good”. It is considered to be representative of the five elements from which man is made, namely fire, air, water, earth and spirit. The Pentagram has been one of the most persistent and powerful symbols in our history and was revered by nearly all ancient cultures, be it Egyptian, Greek, Babylonian, Chinese, Indian or Mayan. The mystic icon is considered to hold several layers of symbolism. It is viewed as a symbol of life, love, light, unity, wholeness, and quest for divine knowledge.
Some people believe that a Pentagram is not circled, while a Pentacle has the star enclosed by a circle. Still, others say that a Pentagram is a diagram or drawing of the star and is referred to as a Pentacle only when it takes the form of a physical object. A pentacle is an amulet used in magical evocation, generally made of parchment, paper, cloth, wood, or metal (although it can be of other materials), on which the symbol of a spirit or energy being evoked is drawn. It is often worn around the neck, or placed within the triangle of evocation.
Pentacles may be sewn to the chest of one’s garment, or may be flat objects that hang from one’s neck or are placed flat upon the ground or altar. Pentacles are almost always shaped as disks or flat circles. Many varieties of pentacle can be found in the grimoire. This form of pentacle is formed upon a disk which may be used either upon an altar or as a sacred space of its own. The pentacle is representative of the Earth in occult usage.
The Good, Universal Consciousness, including both individual and world Soul, leading finally to Nature, The Pentacle right side up represents the Divine ruling over the world of matter. Let us not forget that it also represents the elements Spirit, Water, Air, Earth, and Fire as shown below. This is most commonly used Pentacles by most people in Witchcraft.
